"So you see, the ceramic exterior of the projectile would be ideal for carrying a payload of the new compound I described to you. It would shatter on impact, the statically charged particles will cling to the target, before the combustion process begins. And once ignited, it burns with surprising intensity and sustainability. Several seconds of temperatures comparable to Napalm!"
Aris looked across her peers, cocked brows and silent nodding all around. Her pitch was going well.
"All it needs before mass production and sales, is a little bit of field testing. Im confident in my product."
She handed her lab results, metrics, estimates and complex chemical formulae to Abendis, one of the three men around the small table in front of her.
They were beneath her, really. Not so much equal peers as they were rivals. And even then, they were poor ones.
Jones hadn't made good money on his sales in years, his products were too unreliable.
Kelkin was a good developer, but a poor salesman. His inventions would sell, but only by going through third parties who took a hefty fee.
Abendis was quiet as always, in many ways the polar opposite of Kelkin. He could sell a book to a blind man, but his products were shoddy knockoffs, and rarely fetched good money.
The latter scoffed as he poured over her findings, her development. It had taken her merely a week to find a proper vector for weaponizing the intense flammability of the new fuel-source.
"Infuriatingly clever as always..." he grumbled, never one to give praise freely.
"Worth millions with the right clientell."
"Billions, actually. Im thinking military contract for this one. We will offer a steady supply of rounds, some specialized weapons modifications for firing them without shattering them, and of course a minor fee for letting our client have the only ones around."
Abendis shook his head, swiping on the pad to show more data. It was all there.
She was young, beautiful, sensual on the outside. But on the inside, she was ruthless, calculating and terrifyingly intelligent. A dangerous enemy, but a difficult ally with her plots within plots.
"Flammable weapons is a warcrime, Al'Zahri." Abendis grumbled, looking up at her.
All she did to defend herself against the accusation, was shrug. "Less paperwork, more money. Thats the only difference."
There was a sudden rumble, the clattering of glass vials as the room shook. Jones looked around, wide eyed. Kelkin jumped up and swore. "What was that? Whats going on?"
Abendis smirked, looking up from the pad. "Vindication. We cannot keep breaching international law and not expect retaliation. Sooner or later, someone will get shot up enough by our weapons to want to target us. This has to stop, so I am stopping it. Im bringing you to account, Al'Zahri."
he pulled out a gun from his jacket, and pointed it at the young woman. "I wouldnt recommend fighting back, dear. I'd much rather see you judged in court for what you are."
Jones looked mortified. He didnt have as much of a soft spot for their youngest member, as he had a hardon for her. He had told him too many things over empty glasses of bourbon.
Aris had her bright emerald eyes locked on Abendis. And much to his annoyance, she smiled.
"You got that pistol from Kenzie, didnt you?" she tittered.
"Kenzie... who is-". She didnt let him finish.
"Employee number c8264, Kenzie Watterby. Her son has cancer, you know. She told me herself when i had drinks with her last week. That, and a few other things..."
Abendis frowned. "What's your point."
"My point is, you'd be amazed what a woman would do to pay her child's chemotherapy. I wouldn't pull the trigger if i were you. Not if you feel attached to that arm of yours, anyway."
"You're bluffing." Abendis growled deeply.
Aris shrugged. "Fifty fifty chance darling, you either blow your hand clean off, or you take me out. But you DO know i don't like gambling, and id much rather you stayed coherent for this next part."
The man twitched his finger, but a cold surge rushed down his spine.
Aris's eye darted up to the corner of her glasses. "13.46... Your breach team was three minutes late. Sloppy."
Abendis rolled his eyes, lowering his gun. "So high and mighty, even when ten armored men are coming for your arres-"
"Seven."
"What?"
Aris's mouth curled into a smile, infuriatingly smug. "Seven men." A little blip disappeared from the projection of on the inside of her glasses. "Oh, sorry. Six."
A dull roaring rumble punctuated by a distant, distorted scream rang trough the room.
"What the hell is going on?!" Abendis growled, slamming the gun on the table.
"I told you just a moment ago, Abendis." Aris's lips stretched into a wide smirk.
"All my new product needs, is a little bit of field testing."
