STEPS FOR PAINTTOOLSAI - See the full list of steps here!
Asuming you're using PaintToolSAI. Steps will still be very similar, even with different programs! c:

Step 1: SKETCH IT! - Sketch out your desired pose! Fine tune it until you're happy with it!

Step 2: INK IT! - As cleanly as possible, trace over your own sketched work, adjust and add small details where you see fit!

Step 3: FILL IT IN! - Using the magic wand tool for selecting, select outside of the lines, and then increase the size of the selected area by 1 until you're happy. If there are still gaps outside of the lines, go back with the "Select Pen" tool, and fill in those gaps. Invert the selection and use the bucket tool! Voila! Maybe add a little "accent" shiny spots on a new layer on this step or the next!

Step 4: COLOR IT! - Now that you have a clean base to color on, make a layer above that and tick the little box that says "Clipping Group." You are now able to color in your character without making a mess on your canvas. Keep creating layers and coloring until you're happy!

Step 9: FINAL TOUCHES - Make those colors for your character visible again and check that you're happy with the colors you shaded with. If not, tick the box that says "Preserve Opacity" and grab your coloring tool and change the color to what you'd like! Or you can also use a "Hue & Saturation" slider, though this sometimes affects the quality of the edges and causes them to remain the same color. Once you're happy with this beautiful almalgamation of colors, add those finishing touches and details, such a cute little background, a frame, an outline, and so on. Annnnnnd you're done!! Enjoy~ ♥
