Ever so often I feel like drawing the Mario Bros. It's just something I do. They're designs are fun to draw and play with and usually during artist sprees, the ole' red 'n green moustachio'd plumbers wriggle into my brain and I just have to doodle them. I've posted pics of them here and there, so it's nothing any of you are unfamiliar with. After all these years though, I've never really attempted to draw them to my style. I usually just draw them as is or well, in my own sort of style but still to their strictly canonical looks, so as yet another inexplicable urge to draw Nintendo's mascots came to me I wondered... "how would 'I' draw them?"
This really got my brain working and more and more ideas came to me for my interpretations of Mario and Luigi, so much so that it drove me crazy until I finally got these ideas on paper (because all of these ideas came to me when I was at work and incapable of drawing... isn't it always the way that out best ideas come to us when we're totally unable of doing anything?) In the end, I'm extremely happy with the results! I really wanted to play up Mario's silent, stoic persona he's given in the RPGs, while further exaggerating Luigi's clumsier mannerisms. I also wanted to go for a slightly more realistic look to them to make them look more like actual plumbers, because I always liked how the live-action skits in the Super Mario Super Show made them look like guys who could actually just be regular joe plumbers. That being why I gave Mario the old blue shirt, literally making him a "blue-collar" guy. It wasn't really because I prefer the original look of their shirts being blue, honestly I'm pretty indifferent to whether or not their shirts or overalls are of their corresponding color.
I'll probably draw more of these, showing off how I imagine they emote and possibly other characters. Even though I've pretty much drawn Wario and Waluigi to my own style, I may attempt them as well because they're just fun to draw. Anyway, just a fun project I took up. Was a lot of fun and felt good to just tear away from all the other stuff I stress my self out with working on and just do something for me. Hope you enjoy it

wow hey, nicely done! drawing the moustached duo really shows off the unique facets of your style. c=
its funny how the shirt instantly pops the old show back into my head, not many people go that rout with drawing em'. cool to see that for a change!
slipping all those item trinkets in was a neat lil' touch too, and it doesnt look like you held out on making the background really pop either. fine job~!
