You have to be really good at adjusting how hard you press the pencil against the paper. I can get 24 shades of grey from the same pencil. I don't use those art pencils, the harder the lead the easier the papers tears. :x
Also to get really smooth shading, you should make a blending stick...just roll a scrap piece of paper into a REALLY TIGHT tube of solid paper about half the thickness of a cigarette. Use a piece of tape to hold the roll together. Then use heavy pressure when you smooth out the dark sections, and light pressure on the light section. OOOh,OOOh, VERY IMPORTANT: use only ONE SIDE of the stick for dark and one side for light. Make sure you lable which side is which, or you might make a big black streak in your almost non existant light greys. I would also suggest that you wait until you are satisfied with youy drawing before you use the blending stick, because it kinda makes things hard to erase after the graphite gets ground into the paper... :|
