Before she met Niamh, Ciara's closest friend was a black stallion named Embarr. Originally trained as a war horse, Embarr came to Ciara on her twelfth birthday, when her parents sent her away from the city to save her from a messy siege. While he was, in most respects, a perfectly ordinary horse, Embarr was more a companion and a guardian to Ciara than a pet. She always rather suspected he was quite a bit more intelligent than he let on, too, even if he couldn't speak. Though he still had a horse's sense of mischief, where treats were concerned.

Oh, he's definitely her protector. He's known her since she was a pup and takes kind of a big brother attitude toward her. Nobody lays a hand on her if he can help it. As for being a war horse, he probably would have been a good one, prior to Ciara's gentling influence on him. The only trouble is, he absolutely refuses to wear a saddle or tack of any kind. He also had a bad habit of throwing anyone he didn't like which, before he met Ciara, was everyone.
Well, actually, he washed out of being the king's personal war mount. But close enough! Though, in fairness, he was still being trained when he and Ciara were sent out of the city to save them from a disastrous siege. Either way, he was much better off staying with her than being put on the battlefield.
Ha! Embarr can't breathe fire, so far as anyone knows, but anyone who lays a hand on Ciara will probably wish they'd met the hellish horse instead! Funny thing is, Ciara wasn't particularly interested in horses before she met Embarr, except insofar as they are the primary means of transportation in her homeland. It was just that she was the only one he trusted, likely because she was the only one who never tried to put a saddle on him, and they just sort of became friends.
Embarr was such a fun character to write for. I know the whole intelligent horse thing is a pretty common trope, but I always thought he had plenty of personality and really shone through as a character. This is an adorable little moment between them, and it does a pretty good job of summing up a lot of their relationship. They really were more like friends than horse and rider.
