Though frequently bedridden, in the final stages of Swamp Fever, the pony will feel compelled to find their way outside, so that their burgeoning roots may dig deep into the soil, permanently anchoring them as they stiffen up while their canopy forms and flowers blossom, spreading that infectious pollen... There is no known cure.
The most recent episode of MLP keyed right into my interests. After seeing it, I just HAD to get it out of my system.

That part of the episode I didn't understand. Zecora was directly infected, but Fluttershy and the doctor weren't exposed to the flowers. Does that mean it's possible to become infected by simply coming in contact with one who is already infected? If so, that only makes it more horrifying. We're talking about a highly infectious, incurable disease with a horrific end result. It would be an epidemic! Imagine how many ponies have been turned into trees!
Love it!
Love it!
In the beginning of the episode Zecora and Fluttershy are out in the swamp, and if you pause it and look when the whole swamp is in view- the ENTIRE part of the forest they're in is those trees that bear the infection. It really makes you wonder what the ratio of ponies to trees are with these things, how many were born by seeds over transformation... and there's no way to tell them apart! Whole villages could have been transformed by this!
I suppose a factor in favor of ponies would be population density and how infectious diseases spread. Equestria is a sparsely populated country, kinda like Europe in the middle ages. After a certain point, infections can't spread, usually after 40-60% of the population has fully succumbed, just because non-infected and non-immune individuals are so far apart, as with the Black Plague. So while it could never wipe out all ponies, it would certainly be an epidemic as you say... and would leave huge swaths of Equestria covered in infectious forest.
This is good story material right here, I'd love to explore or read a scenario like that. Super fun. XD

For sure! It could be fun to write, too. I might try it sometime.
Yeah, I noticed that too in screencaps after the fact. They don't specify if the trees can grow on their own, but I just assumed any tree would be a former creature that got infected (could be anything, ponies, griffons, dragons, manticore, etc.) I just might try writing something on the subject, not sure yet.
