On the morning of Ciara's 12th birthday, her parents snatched her out of her nice, warm bed and rushed her down to the stables with everything she owned stuffed in a satchel. The war was lost, her mother said, and the enemy was only a few scant miles away from the city walls. They gave her a kiss on the cheek and the fastest horse in the city, and sent her out into the world just hours ahead of what would prove to be the shortest and bloodiest siege in history.
Four days later, exhausted, hungry and more than ready to just give up, Ciara tumbled from the back of her horse into the middle of the dusty road. She had just enough energy to climb back up on her knees, but no more, and she sat there feeling sorry for herself for quite a long time. That was when the rabbit child came out from among the trees by the side of the road. Niamh wasn't the first rabbit Ciara had ever met, but she was the first one who was Ciara's own age and the first one who didn't look at Ciara like she might attack at any moment. Instead, Niamh came over and offered Ciara a hand up without any hesitation at all.
Neither of them had any way of knowing what the future would hold, but when Ciara took Niamh's hand was the moment the future began.

And now we know......the beginning of the story. :)
Really, that is so sweet I had to go check my sugar level. I'd cry except it's really a very happy moment. More so than either of them can appreciate right then. >:3 How nice it is for us, who can be like goddesses and see things like this from all perspectives and time frames.

Aww, you're so kind to me. I've always loved this picture. Simple as it is, it captures the first meeting between Ciara and Niamh so beautifully. The artist hadn't read the story, just the very condensed idea I sent her, but it really is beautifully done and I just had to write a little something specifically to go with it. I really am so very glad you like it, and thank you so much for all the kind words!
How could I not love the picture and the story behind it? The artist did a fantastic job, especially not knowing Niamh and Ciara well! But your short story of Ciara's plight and Niamh extending her paw in friendship to help another is beautiful. Thanks for writing it and sharing! How lucky Ciara and Niamh really are!
No doubt he's just out of sight, taking advantage of the break to grab some lunch. Never fear, even at this early age Ciara has spent much of her life learning how to look after horses and this one, who's name is Embarr by the way, will become one of her very best friends. I have a few pictures of them together which I may post shortly.
Aww... Those holes in her pants and that look on her face, how can you not help but want to give her a hug? She just looks so helpless there. Having read the scene where she's sent away I definitely know where she's coming from, no doubt it's a difficult moment for her, but lucky for her she has Niamh to give her shelter. :)
I've always loved this picture. It just capture the moment so perfectly, and I definitely agree that the look on Ciara's face is really what makes it work so well. She is very lucky to have met Niamh, and so many of her friends, who helped her out over the years, too. But it's no wonder why she and Niamh have always been especially close.
