Actually, you'd be surprised how off-the-cuff a fair amount of it is. Gill told me the basic central premise for the chapter and where she wanted Battu to be able to go as a character over the longer term; I came up with the sci-fi mechanics to structure it around and make sense; we went back and forth a bit for approval, created a couple of new main characters as foils to help focus the story while Battu remained the central focus; and that was enough for the script to basically evolve organically in my head from there as well as fleshing out a number of chapters' worth of plot, action and character dynamics and evolution for the remainder of the prison arc (which should bring us up to the close of issue seven, where the second print volume would end).
Wow, their legal system really isn't geared towards being unbiased and fair. Kind of reminds me of cardassians in Star Trek. It's never about proving innocence or guilt, just assigning the correct punishment. Hope to see that prince again soon so he can throw in his two sense, though I somehow get the feeling he'll only make an appearance after Battu has gotten in a fair bit more trouble.
