Sál Bjǫrn est un esprit en forme d'ours apparaissant pour la première fois au IX siècle, au moment où les vikings se sont mis à lancer de nombreux raids à l'ouest et à l'est de la mer. Invoqué par les peuples du nord, Sál Bjǫrn confèrent courage et bravoure à ceux-ci. Outre sa force et sa capacité à faire face à l'adversité, cet esprit renvoi également à l'idée de calme, de repos et possède une connexion unique avec l'énergie de la terre. Il apparait sur les champs de bataille sous la forme d'un gigantesque ours brun au pelage aussi blanc que la neige. Il se sert des runes de l'ancien Futhark pour utiliser les forces primaires de la nature.
Les vikings pouvaient également rencontrer cet esprit dans d'autres circonstances non définies, sous une forme moins combative.
Au fil du temps, les peuplades du nord ont peu à peu oublié l'existence de Sál Bjǫrn, diminuant ainsi ses pouvoirs, le condamnant à errer sous sa forme secondaire et amoindrie jusqu'à nos temps modernes.
