Cool effect! :) You did a fantastic job isolating the zebra from the background. Even the whiskers and mane tufts are preserved. I presume you used Photoshop or somesuch to tweak the Hue/Saturation, but how did you select/isolate the zebra? Did you have to sit there for an hour with the Magic Wand, or do you have a tool or plugin that makes it easier to select complex organic shapes?

Slight modification of the colors. It was brightly colored behind the zebra.

How I separated the zebra from the background? F/2.8 on the camera. This is a natural shot with a low aperture with a background far enough away to do that.

*blink* D'oh! It's obvious, now that I look at it, and so much easier than post-processing in PS. I guess I'm so new-school I forgot all about depth of field and composing-in-camera. Been a long time since I played with my 35mm. :)

Yeah modern photography is both camera and photoshop. But if you do have a perfectly clean clear shot that's a whole different story but as I said here this was a more natural shot and yes a lot of people forget about depth of field. I live in the lower f/stop range closer to wide open so I get that separation maybe too much ;)

I dunno about "too much"; if most of your animal pix are taken in an urban environment, blurring the background is often a plus. :)
