The wind howled like a mournful wolf, low and crying, the sound carrying across the swept landscape. With it came leaves and twigs and other such things, torn from the world by the gale. There was little rain in it, but what there was whipped against everything, forcing itself into every crevice and weak point. It was a storm that carried a coldness about it, a harsh chill that sucked away the warmth of anything that braved it. It was not a storm of rains, of thunder. Not one that gave and smothered with wetness. It was a hungry storm, thin and grasping and greedy. It cut and tore and grabbed, snatching up umbrellas and sending hats skittering away, always out of reach of their desperate owners.
Through this the dox sat, unmoved. For he knew well that it was not the storm without that was to be feared, but the storm within.
