Back to doodling my own take on character designs. But this time, doing something a little different. For instead of making my own design of well established villains, I'm taking cracks at villains whose designs begin and end with 8-bit sprites and bringing them to life how I imagine they'd look if they WEREN'T 8-bit. :P
This one is easily one of my favorite bosses in the Metal Gear series, and one of the final bosses of the 1990 game, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. He's the final member of the enemy unit known as "The Whispers," and this particular fellow is referred to only as 'Night Fright.'
Night Fright was, far and ahead, my favorite boss of MG2 for quite a few reasons. His boss fight was one I consider actually superior to quite a few bosses in the later MGS games. For starters, he's completely invisible, with no outline to give you an idea of where he is, and no blip on your radar either. You have to use his footsteps across different sounding floors to get an idea of where he is, and go after him before he gets you. Traps, grenades, rockets and pistols all work wonders here, but it's an almost 30 year old boss fight that still requires strategy and patience.
Just as a character, he's someone we know nothing about, just that he's the final member of the Whispers, and unlike every other boss in the series, he doesn't make any grand speech or have some gimmick to his persona. He's a silent killer. You receive a codec call from an unknown source, warning you that you're trapped with Night Fright, and then, boom, you're up against the fella. And once you beat him, he's just dead. No grand speech. Absolutely nothing to inform you as to who or what he was. Just a battle with a completely invisible enemy. The end.
