Another pic i take from Bremerhaven`s "old harbor " . It shows the last XXI Submarine Wilhelmbauer .
A bit history about this sub : Build from 29 October 1944 to 13 January 1945 as U2540 , it entered service 24 February . After some back and forth it was sunk by its crew following operation Regenbogen (Rainbow) . The wreck was raised 1957 . 1960 it entered the second service as Wilhelm Bauer an testing boat . 1980 it collide with an destroyer of the fletcher class . Two years later the sub gone off duty . An club bought it an rebuild it as good as possible back into the wwII condition .
To the class: The XXI was the most modern sub class of the third Reich and of the world in wwII . It belonged to the secret super weapons of the third Reich but came to late to be used . Only a few go out on patrol and if the surrender had come a few days later , would have the royal navy an carrier less ,as one of the subs was hours after the surrender in a perfect fire position on a British combat group but break of the operation . And ever noticed that the first cold war subs are looking like this type ? Thats because of its revolutionary design that was ahead of its time what was the reason for the high performance .

Type XXI also was the first German U-boat that actually had a shower, or any bathing facilities for that matter.
Helmuth Walther, Helmuth Walter for the English spelling, was the genius behind the hull design, his smaller record setting submarine that used the teardrop design seen commonly today, especially on Russian designs.
I really wish they had built at least one Walther boat, the type XVIII, just to see how fast the thing could really go.

while cool, your description is not entirely accurate, that submarine used features taken from this submarine class built merely a year or two earlier after their clumsy yet successful attack on the battleship tirpitz.

Think about it for example let out the massive tanks on each side WWII subs had . Look at the Gato or VII class and would notice it .
XXI was also the first submarine that could travel fast under the surface than on it , it had the snorkel and was allover more build for underwater use . Submarines before had been how strange it might sound only submersible torpedo-boats .

Well the snorkel was used before that sub ever came into action, however it is true, that that sub was one of the first actually designed with it in mind, the design of the sub in most aspects however clash in the opinion of speed, while fast for its era the design holds the fundamental flaws of not exactly arrow dynamic, though you are right in the speed underwater was astounding, though in retrospect, most subs rarely used torpedoes on enemy ships anyways. so a better description is submersible destroyers.
Now i am not arguing against the design either, it heavily influenced both the us and the Russian navies advancement in submarine warfare, more so russian than the U.S. as US subs at the time were heavily at the same level as XXI, the XXI though was a major player in Russia's becoming of a Submariner super power.

It varieties much from nation and time . For example at the beginning of WWII German subs used the deck gun very often but in the years after , as the British freighters get guns too , the deck gun get useless and so it completely was laid aside .
