What We Call Fans - The Orville (not Redenbacher)
"Never give up. Never surrender."
"By Grapthar's hammer, you shall be avenged!"
"Look! I have one job on this ship. It's stupid, but I'm going to do it. Okay?"
....I kind of feel partial to the last one....
Ohhhh....humans make a lot of sci-fi stuff, but they are so behind. They were suppose to have hoverboards (WORKING ONES mind you) and public showing holograms as Back to the Future said they would. Star Wars happened a long time ago in a different galaxy, so that stuff actually happened way back and even THEY had fleets of starships! And as for Stark Trek...money isn't a thing? Oooooohhhh...such optimists!
Galaxy Quest did it right. You drop humans onto a starship with thoughts they could possibly survive alien encounters and you get...weeeellll....something that's dang good fun to watch that's for certain!
Seth Mcfarlane, maker of Family Guy, American Dad, and the Cleveland show....is now making a comedy-drama science fiction series. Ironically, one of Family Guy's first gags included Stark Trek...maybe it was a precursor of what was to come. And while Family Guy has it's share of distaste and controversy, it has the remarkable trait of being a show that was canceled after the second/third season...but was brought back thanks to the fans, going strong ever since.
So Seth's venture into science fiction comedy is called "The Orville", and like most of his work, Seth takes a direct role, playing as lead Ed Mercer, who is given command of The Orville after a bitter divorce. Unfortunately...his first officer is his ex-wife (whether this was a sign of dumb management from space control or someone's cruel joke for Mercer is anybody's guess). The crew is fleshed out with characters like Mercer's best friend and helmsman, Gordon. Bortus, an alien from a single-gender species, Issac the "robot" from a machine race, and apparently Yaphit, a goo...creature I guess.
Overall, the series' little tibits severly remind me of Galaxy Quest, which was a fantastic movie and spoof on it's own. Given that Seth has some long running series and has an appreciation for science ficition, I'm hoping the series can go the distance.
Heck, I'm stuck on a ship with a group of crazy people and things happening, I NEED to laugh at it happening to other people in the same situation.
Red Shirts aren't a thing in this are they...??
Maybe. Want to be the first one?
Ah heh heh...you and your...jokes heh heh.
Joke? Uhh...suuuuurrreee....
