Originating with the East German Deutsche Reichsbahn 636 class 143 locomotives were constructed between 1984 and 1991 and are considered to be the most successful class of German electric locomotives.
Following German reunification freight traffic in the former East Germany declined and large numbers of locomotives were stored before many class 143 locomotives moved to routes in the former West Germany. After the DB and DR were combined in 1994 class 143 locomotives were used on many more lines in the former West Germany. The type is regularly used on the Rhine S-bahn services.
