we have had similar happen to 3 different cats in the family at different extents. Once by a storm door the cats could pry open but the spring would close again, once trying to catch a cat with a door, and the third came home that way.
My neighbor's cat doesn't have a tail.. It was sleeping under her car when she went to leave.
