Me thinks that Ralph may not be as dense as he seems, He actually worked out the basic control, in a somewhat backwards way. Now if he can just manage to get the A/C on the ground in one piece.. he just might have a way off the farm. Fortunately, the aircraft is a remarkably forgiving one. Fun story, had me laughing all the way through. A good example of the not so dumb as he seems Rube type of story. A good one. THE COLONEL
I like how so many of the aircraft's flying behaviors remind Ralph of various other critters, enough so that he can twig on to what needs to be done to survive his first solo flight.
I imagine he got down somehow but I have to wonder if the pilot was walking to his destination thereafter.

That's a good possibility and that is a classic example of what not to do... though in our own little establishment, in the last year a flashlight was left in a flap well (big bucks to repair the flap) and an aileron was destroyed pushing an airplane back without enough eyes on the ground and the wing struck the hangar door. It was all fixable but equally and totally preventable...

you just never know...
True story - when I was about twelve, we had a boat. It was docked at a marina on Chautauqua lake. That marina was pretty old and had some big barns and inside one of them was a bush hog. Well don't you know that every time I saw that thing I just had to push the start button - but only enough to make the motor growl just a little bit. Well... one day it decided to growl hard and the darn thing lit of and began marching across the space of that boat barn and there I was trying to get it to stop with no idea how to do that. I finally pulled the spark plug wire off and then ran like hell.
After that I didn't push that button any more.
