Wonderfully well-written! Honestly, I question this love often too. Most people seem to panic when deprived from that simple element, but not us. I guess we just think differently about it, are more practiced and calm about it?
Me, I love doing this sort of thing. There is just something so relaxing about it, whether it be in the open air or underwater. The latter can be especially calming, as all sound becomes muffled, replaced by the churning of the currents in your ears. The way it cools your entire body, and cradles it in its weightlessness. There is something very vulnerable about it. :o

Your description on underwater breath holding is completely beautiful and immediately reminded me of the feelings and sensations of doing so! And thanks for the kind words, I wrote all that very quickly and I wasn't even sure where I was going with it but I just wanted to share with people here my love of the feeling. I was not expecting such a lovely response from someone, so thank for sharing your thoughts and wonderful description.
Being underwater completely has that. "Very vulnerable" I like the way you put that. All sound becoming muffled, you can hear or feel your heart beating and then slowly you start to feel that all too familiar need of a breath but you continue to stay underwater longer still.

I think the biggest factor for me is my lack of physical endurance (I am... not exactly athletic), but I know willpower definitely plays a part too.
Normally I'll only last like 45 seconds at most, but earlier today I decided to try doing it while playing through a level in a game I like that happens to last exactly 1m9s, and I made it all the way through, barely. (Yeah, I know, still not that much to write home about, but it goes to show that it can definitely depend on how much motivation you have.)
I'm definitely going to practice it more, though.
