Summer giggled with joy as the salty water pushed and pulled her. "KENDRAAAAA!" she called out trying to urge her friend to the water's edge. The floating device kept Summer safely above the waves as they crashed over her and splashed along the rocks and sand. It was a beautiful day with a strong breeze. It raced with the clouds above and pulled at the foaming waves of the ocean. On such a hot day it was a pleasure to splash about in the water and dampen her fur.
The mantibab on the highest point of the hill sat and watched. Her tail lashed about, her uneasiness practically dripping from her as she watched Summer squeal and kick about in the water. Never could she tolerate the deep depths of water, never since she nearly lost her only sibling, Charlie, to it. She had never allowed herself or her baby brother near the deep dark waters again. Much to her dismay, Kendra's friend had managed to drag her out to the beach. It was a popular spot on the heated days like today. Still Kendra could not budge from her spot. The sun scorched across her back and heated her mane. But her paws remain rooted to the earth beneath her. No matter how many times her friend called out to her she would not budge.
"Come on! Kendra, it's fun I promise!" cried out the sunny little bab. She had no idea the inner turmoil her friend faced watching her bounce along the waves.
"No!" Kendra boomed, her voice crisp and clear. Even the crashing waves could not drown out the decisiveness of her tone. Desperately she wanted to turn away, to leave this place. Kendra couldn't bare to leave her friend though, helplessly floating at the mercy of the water. Did Summer really not know the dangers that lurked beneath? She forced an intake of breath and sighed slowly trying to will her anxiety away.
Summer slumped in her tube and pouted. The water splashed her in the face and she sputtered, trying to blink the salt water from her eyes. "Boo..." she murmured to herself. She was sure this would be a fun activity for the both of them, it was so hard to engage Kendra unless they were training together. Her friend had been taking less and less time for herself, she only wanted to show her a good time. How much fun could she possibly be having up there on the hill? Grumpily she began to paddle her way back to the shoreline. The waves helped carry her easily to her destination and she trotted up the sand. The inflatable tube still hanging from around her midsection. She gave a big shake to clear her fur of the heavy water that clung to it and began to leap her way to the slope to reach her friend.
Kendra watched quietly, though as the bright bab approached she turned her gaze down to the water and foam lapping the sand. Her eyes couldn't seem to tear from it even as Summer spoke to her.
"Kendra...? Are you okay?" Summer asked softly. She looked down from her spot to the sandy shore and blinked. She couldn't see whatever it was that Kendra saw down there. So instead she sad down next to her friend. Stealing glances towards her, not sure what to say. Kendra looked so stressed, so much for a fun day in the sun... Summer sighed softly and shivered as a gust of ocean air pushed at her wet fur. She leaned to the side letting the wind push her easily and lean against Kendra. Her wet fur immediately warmed by the heat Kendra's coat had collected. Summer nearly melted against her, her eyes closed and she nuzzled into Kendra's shoulder. "Mmm, you're so warm." She said softly.
Kendra's muscles had been tight, her body looked ready to take flight any second. But the moment Summer had brushed her damp fur against her she softened. A wave of relief washed over her knowing Summer was out of the water. She was right there with her, safe and sound. Kendra took another deep breath and slowly let it out before gently leaning her head towards Summer's and nuzzled her back. That lit a smile across Summer's face, it was so bright Kendra almost caught her lips tugging at the corners as well. Kendra didn't say another word, she only closed her eyes and held Summer close. Not wanting to let her go, especially back down there...
