Aaaa I'm so happy I can finally post this! It's a breath of fresh air to finally have it completed. This was certainly a challenge from an artistic standpoint, but in the end it became a win against a bit of a personal struggle.
Ajna and I were both very into Breath of the Wild a few months ago and decided to release this ych (which partially helped me to actually purchase the game originally!) However as we've worked together, I think our skill has grown a lot... And that actually ended up being a double edged sword here.
If you take a look at the original version linked above, that was as far as I was expecting this background to go. But once Tee and I finished the character, he just didn't seem to fit anymore. The personal struggle therein being, I think this is probably the single most detailed, non organic background I've done, ever. It was a daunting task that loomed over me for some time before I finally was able to tackle it in small chunks and got to a point where it finally felt like the character and the background fit together. My rough estimate is that to get it to this point, I ended up putting another 7 hours into this background, even having my partner Dash take some high res screenshots of the game that I used for texture and color reference.
I'm not sure I will always be happy with how this came out, and I know as I continue to grow as an artist, my feelings about it will probably change but for where I'm at right now, this is a success and was a great learning opportunity. I have nothing but thanks and appreciation for NoWolf, pictured here, for his patience with me while I struggled to complete this. Thank you for being so kind throughout this process!
Ajna did lines and flats on the character, I shaded the character and did the background work.
Character pictured is © NoWolf, and of course Breath of the Wild and Link are © Nintendo.
Enjoy!
