The things people do to get famous.
Word spread around the internet one day that Garfield.com was holding an art contest for Garfield's 40th anniversary, and that the art that Jim Davis liked would be featured in a 40th anniversary tribute book set to be released next year. And I drew this. I'm way too old to be interested in this kind of crap but I drew it anyway. With colored pencils no less, and poorly touched up in GIMP.
I decided to make a picture that charted the progression of the evolution of Garfield's face over the previous four decades, as I felt that such a picture would have a high probability to be picked to be in the book. However, I am not the best artist, unfortunately— in fact, I personally hold the opinion that I draw like Jon. I DRAW LIKE FREAKING ODIE. You know, that dog who stands around and pants all day. Yeah.
I expect this artwork, if it is featured, to be shown on the page where Jim Davis talks about he slowly upgraded Garfield over time. Notice how since 1984ish the Garfields are just variations of the same design. The eyes grow slightly slanted, beginning in the 1990's, but that's really it. Personally I prefer the earlier Garfields, the ones that more closely resembled a cat (instead of looking like some weird human with stripes on a tail) and walked quadrapedally on four legs. I think 1979 and 1981 are my favorites; 1983 is okay as well, but I prefer pre-1983 Garfield with round eyes.
I'm rambling, aren't I? I'm sorry. I know I'm a total nerd. I'm going to go pretend I'm not a loser now. Bye!
UPDATE 2/5/2018: I found an email a few weeks ago from a PAWS representative saying that they couldn’t find a place for my art in the book, but will definitely be using it in social media. So just be on the lookout, I guess.

It was fine when he only did it part of the time and still mostly walked on all fours. But then he just stopped acting like a cat altogether.
The first few years of the strip, as well as the specials and the first cartoon, were like the only good things to come out of Garfield. Then Jim just sort of gave up.
