Rant: Adopt RUles I Hate

Intro
Hello, it is Uluri here just wanting to prattle on about adopts and some of the ridiculous rules that some folks attach to them. (because I suddenly feel like ranting, not because I'm looking.) I'll begin with this, I am a person who shops for adoptable characters quite often. From time to time I have a story role that needs to be filled in something so I go shopping for adopts. There are a lot of adopts I avoid just because of the rules the original artist sets on them. Doesn't matter jack shit if this is the goddliest of characters I could ever lay my eyes on. If the artist has rules set in that is going to cripple my use of them, I'll pass it up in a heart beat. Believe it or not, Sin is an adopted character I got from Ripurii. He was to fill the role of a DnD campaign that (oh my gosh) got out of hand. He ended up becoming one of my main OCs, and my favorite. I agree with rules that promote the new owner's creativity and use of the character, and to that I have to thank Ripurii for eternity. Sin would have been much different otherwise. When buying/selling adopts, I believe You are no longer the owner of said character once you sell it, please let the new owner have full ownership of their new OC.
1. Never Ever change the design
This rule is horrifyingly crippling for a character's potential. I won't even look at the adopt if this happens to be a rule in the artist's terms. Adopts aren't collectables to be stacked onto a shelf to look at only. They are meant to be used by their owners. This use can cause a character to get a backstory, get art, interact within the new owner's own stories, and grow. This character growth can cause changes in the character. They can be small changes or large changes, but as one uses their OCs, they can change. ESPECIALLY if said new OC is intended to go into a piece of Literature or a Comic. Telling a person to never change their character is telling a person to never use the character beyond that single time frame that it exists when you got them.
Also, I've seen some rather extreme versions of this rule where you aren't even allowed to change their hairstyle, clothes, (or put clothes on them in the case of furries), and I just wanna say FUCK THAT. Hair grows, it can be cut, styled and trimmed, and I have more than just one outfit in my own dresser. Outer design isn't the only thing that makes a character.
2. Credit me Every Time you Use the design
Firstly, this rule makes me feel like the character isn't mine even though I bought it. I'm not going to buy a character that won't be mine. Secondly, that's a nasty way to get some promotion. I wouldn't use a character as often if I had to write "but I didn't make him" any time I drew them. I draw my OCs a LOT. Sin has over 200 artworks and I've only had him for 1 year. Now, before you all get into a hissy, I am fine with the rule "credit my artwork, and give me credit for the first time you drew him." That's super fine. In fact, I like that rule the most. Give the artist some initial promotion for the new OC. That's good thing to do.
3. You cannot use this Character for Commercial Use. Only Personal
I am NOT SORRY for what I'm about to say, but FUCK YOU. Do you have any idea what you are saying? I cannot use MY character for prints, t-shirts, ych's involving my own character, comics I plan to publish, and so on? I'm going to take my ass out of that shop as fast as possible because fuck that shit into oblivion. The character might as well not exist. Don't even sell it, don't even draw the character. That character DOES NOT belong to me at all if there's a rule like that in place. You are crippling the artists who buy character designs as OCs with that rule.
4. Cannot trade/gift/sell
This one is a minor pet peeve, but it still bothers me like mad. I'd still buy an adopt with that rule, but only if (and a really big only if) I intend to heavily use this character immediately 100%. I usually won't buy/receive an adopt with this rule, though. I don't like this rule for various reasons. Starting mostly with "Cannot give ownership of character to a different person", I have to say... sometimes designs don't stick after the initial buy whether this was a trade, free, or sale. Sometimes a character fades, and its use becomes something not needed anymore. If I'm not using a Character, and I cannot give it to someone, I might as well just erase its existence. Poof. That's really sad fate to give to a character, and I don't agree with it. Secondly, I'd like to discuss "never resell". I understand that you (the creator of the design) don't want some guy buying an adopt for $2, then immediately making profit by reselling it for $10 the next day, but to never be able to resell no matter the circumstances? I agree with the rule "Cannot resell for more than what it was bought for, UNLESS it has additional art" a lot better. It helps to prevent the adopt from getting in the hand of "profit resellers" a bit, while also not forcing someone who spent a lot of money on commissions to rehome their faded character for $1.
Uluri here, and I'm all for adopts being fully owned by their new owners. Once it is no longer mine, I won't be telling you what you can and can't use it for. This kitten I give you becomes your kitten, and I won't loom over you every day to whisper "Hey, I gave you that" everyday. In the same sense, when I buy adopts, I'm looking to be able to use them to their full potential! I want them to be my character, my OC. I might not have created the design, but the character is still mine. I want to be able to treat them as mine!
PS: If you are wondering why I made this a submission, It's so that I can easily get back to it again. Journals aren't searchable on FA. sometimes I like going back to these monstrosities. XP
update: Just wanna let you all know that this is a list of adopt rules that I hate, and most likely would not buy an adopt with these rules attached to them. (Because I guess some people were thinking I bought an adopt with one of these rules attached? Which is not the case, because I avoid these types of adopts like the plague.)

There are a lot of reasons adopts exist. The following don't all pertain to me when I use the term "I", but "I" as in "a person in general". These are just some general reasons I can pull off the top of my head.
- A person can't create a character (as in doesn't know how to draw), but then they find this really really awesome one that just clicks with them. "THAT's my fursona/persona. THAT's the character I need for this." Adopts are a way for people who cannot materialize something to already be there in front of them.
- I need a character now, but I don't know what I want. This is my main reason for getting adopts. Sometimes I need a character, but for the life of me I can't create the one I want. What I need in a character isn't always something I can do myself. I don't know what it is until I see it.
- I like this design and it has inspired me a lot. I want it. (And then you can have it.)
- I need background characters. Like 20. I don't want to make them all myself. That's a lot of work.
- I like collecting characters. I'm a hoarder. They look nice.
- I Like to RP as different characters, and this one fits the bill as to what I'm looking for.
- I am looking for a new fursona/persona because I don't feel attached to my current one, but I can't seem to do it myself.

About 100% of the time when I see batches of adoptables, they're always one base, and then recolored.

Yup. You can do that. Adopts are Designs for sale, and just because it is
on a base, does not mean this design will not inspire a character. A Base is
just that, a basic form of the design. From there you can grow a fine character
into what you need it to be.
Adopts are Designs for sale, A design is only 1/2 of what makes a character. It is up to the new
owner to finish the character by adding it's personality to it (the other 1/2). And character that were previously
owned, but are being sold become just Designs again (1/2 a character) until they get a new owner.

Funny how two of these examples are literally just regular animals with funky coloring patterns. There is no thought or imagination put into them. But you get what you pay for, I suppose.
Specifically a non-character which looks like it has been churned out in an Indian animation studio making knock-off movies.

It's up to the owner of the artwork to make a decision about whether or not they want to do anything about it.
As long as you keep informing original artists of possibly stolen work, you are doing good. Sometimes an artist
might not take action for whatever reason they decide. And Sometimes the process for dealing with it can be
long for the artist. It's all up to the artist, though.

I'm not really a fan of adoptables I honestly find them more of some shimmy scam. Despite not being able to draw I've easily come up with the designs of several characters backstories and ect and found ways to make em in SL or to generally recreate their textures and or patterns faces... bit off there but hey close enough. but mainly my two is my blue sphinx and gold dragon. can't say its much but hey if you ever really want to use, which I doubt, your free to do so just let me know is all XD
Fuuuuuck. You are so bloody on point about all these. ESPECIALLY point 1.
Like...Seriously, asshole, you sold the character, giving them the rights to it. It's not "your" character after that. If you gave the character away to a friend and they did stuff with it that reflected badly onto you in some way, MAYBE you'd have the point. But you lost your right to call the shots when you decided your character was worth less to you than the (Usually exorbitant) money you charged for it.
Point 2, yeah, it's irritating, that. I think a fair compromise is to credit them on their ref sheet, so that when people follow the design they like back to their ref, that's when they see who made it. That's fine. But DEMANDING people credit them each and every time...That's controlling at best and moneygrubbing at worst.
3: Yep, agreed. Like point 1, the only time people would have a leg to stand on would be if, say, it's another member of the seller's sona's species which ended up misrepresenting them? But for the most part, no. Fuck off.
4: Yet again, you got this one perfectly right. People should have the right to give/trade/sell them on...But NOT if they're Adoptable Flipping, ie buying designs and selling them unaltered at a markup. It's people like this that make this rule somewhat justified, because I understand people's fear of this happening.
All in all, VERY good rant. Just yeah, I've been...very vocal about adopts recently, and I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that's making a noise about the utter lunacy of the practices of some people doing this.

I Completely agree with all of the points you made here .w. if you *sell* a character to someone, then it becomes theirs and you shouldn't have those kind of rules attached to a character you sold to someone else for money, I Agree with the "Cannot resell for more than what it was bought for, Unless is has additional art", that I Completely agree with :3
I agree like 1000% with this.. Some rules are just dumb af. Like when I do adopts the only thing I really ask is if they resell just to let me know on some of them. Otherwise I couldn't care less as long as they credit the base maker and myself for design on the original image lol.
You're absolutely correct!!
I myself started collecting adopts quite recently, and never really thought about number 3 until I read your post.
Kinda makes sense since I've bought the character, though I might credit the artist as the designer of that. (I have no art skill whatsoever)
