Endless Realms bestiary - Elder Myconid
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
It's been a while! I've spent most of the summer AFK (not exactly by choice, either, but I can't complain!), and a lot of the work I *have* done has been either private work or boring graphic design stuff - background watermarks, icons, and so forth. I suppose the most exciting thing I did was complete an Endless Realms art book - it will be available as a Kickstarter reward when Lunar Games launches their campaign next year!
The art director recently realised that we only had one intelligent subterranean race and asked me to design a race of mushroom folk - now, we already have a few mushroom creatures, but most of them lack any anthropomorphisation, save for the benign Fungloi, so I was wondering how these guys would differ from the others. I thought, well, we have a race of sentient plant people, so perhaps these are their subterranean counterparts? In designing them, I neglected to give them eyes because why would an underground race that lives in the pitch dark need them? Instead, I figured they could vibrate their gills to produce sound or other vibrations maybe not normally audible to other races to communicate with each other. With that in mind, I proceeded to design a fungal giant who I figured perhaps acted as their leaders or elders - I gave them numerous large bracket fungi, capable of issuing commands and information to its people all at once.
So... basically he's covered in a whole bunch of mushroom loudspeakers :V This guy is a living incarnation of the Saints Row dubstep gun XD

but of course, I did want to share one thing of interest, I was gonna play a DnD game with a friend. and they helped me make a fun character. I was a DireSabretoothedTiger, I think we were planning on like druid and monk? but I was the mount of my girlfriend's Character. so I think in early levels I couldn't speak, or use most items, though I was, for the most part intelligent. i think it could be interesting if there were either creatures or player castes that took ideals from this, since the concept of being another person's transportation is alien, but if it's somebody you care about...it could totally be a new angle to play a tabletop game. a challenge if you will.
I think in this example, you could see things like Saphira from Eragon. who is as much Eragon's transportation as she is his other half. or Falcor from The NeverEnding Story. or even Cringer from He-man. And....I suppose you could look at Transformers as that too. they DO transport the humans, but are powerful in their own right.

you should also consider other types of communication through chemical or spore emission.. things that can go great distances and are often "inaudible" to any other creature unless they have an incredible sense of smell. ( in RL, certain types of swamp mushrooms or such, when crushed by foot or cars, the odor can be smelled for MILES.. and is usually pretty hideous)
such as "warning spores / odors" or such when one is attacked by a hostile force and the creature can send out chemical scents to either call for help, or if it's killed quickly, it can release the equivalent of an SOS in it's last position.. it could also emit a scent while it's in hiding to warn of intruders approaching someplace such as the outskirts of their underground city or so on...
could also use them as offensive and defensive weapons.. spore clouds that blind or sting the eyes and nose, cause massive itching and such to hinder enemies in combat, even poisonous or acidic to cause continuous damage in battle for as long as the foe remains in the large cloud surrounding their bodies..

And, god, yes I do XD I've been lazier this year because I've been doing more graphic stuff (as in, graphic design stuff, not like sexually graphic XD) that I don't bother posting so it looks like I'm doing a lot less now, haha. Plus the ER team is trying to wrap things up a bit and figure out how to actually launch, so they're focused more on that than getting more artwork done.
