Here is my contribution to the photos of today’s solar eclipse. I had planned to drive about four hours north to reach the path of totality, but other obligations prevailed. I did manage to get some nice shots from my back yard and, as you can see, a good percentage of the sun was obscured even here.
The darkness was weird. Although the intensity was something like that of an overcast day, the sun, of course still threw shadows and the temperature dropped noticeably.
My setup was my digital SLR, equipped with a Baader ASSF 50 solar filter. The five images of the sun were shot with a zoom lens set at 210mm (the longest I’ve got) at F4.0 and 1/800 of a second. These were cropped and centered.
The final photo was a fun one that I shot after the eclipse maximum. I was putting my stuff away and noticed the cool crescent shaped images of the sun filtering through the tree onto my driveway. I’ve seen shots like this before and it was neat to get one of my own.
