This is why I also believed that they also have a form of sensing electric pulses as well as sophisticated echolocation. Unless the helmets are designed to allow the near inaudible sonar their domes constantly release, all they'd be "seeing" would be just the inside of their helmets and not much else.
In space, there would be electrical pulses from equipment and ships as well as living organisms. This would ensure the species aren't completely blinded.

Their entire face is photosensitive. Their vision is a very convoluted and masterfully engineered production that is said a Genius solved during their creation. That genius proceeded to get flat wasted and decide that diving into the pool from the balcony would be a great idea. He missed and the party rapidly ended. What worse is that his secret went with him and any attempt to figure it out was for all intents and purposes pointless, so they just kept it as is.
