She was staying at my apartment in Bristol after a particularly long and tiresome contract. She needed the rest, I could tell. To be honest I was just damn glad to have her all to myself, even just for a while.
All the time she kept her phone close by, likely waiting for one of her shady contacts to call her offering a miserable sum for risking her hide running security for even shadier characters in some backwater town.
We were on the couch, having a couple drinks and watching whatever rubbish reality shows we could find on my entry-level cable service, and for just a moment I swear she looked, well... happy. Legimitately, unabashedly happy. Hell, we both did. She wasn't out shooting people and getting shot at in God knows where, I wasn't sleeping alone every night waiting for a call telling me someone put a bullet in her. For a short, tiny moment it felt almost as if we were a normal couple, just enjoying each other's company. The only evidence of our failing relationship was that bloody gun of hers sitting on the end table.
Still however, it was an alright feeling while it lasted. I just wish I could make that sense of normalcy stay for good.
And make her stay for good.
