Exactly. There are (just like elephants) African lions and Indian lions, and apparently the Indian lions had a wide range covering as far as Turkey. When I googled it there's 8 species of lion, naturally 7 of which are in various African regions with the 1 Indian lion being the exception outside of the continent.

Heh, I always imagined my fursona would be an Indian/Asiatic lion, that's why I drew him with a relatively close-cropped mane, but a long, luxurious "beard" - as Asiatics have!

The Barbary is the hairiest subspecies, the one with the mane running down its forelegs and chest and all along its belly. The one from India is the Gir lion, and as Bailiff said, with much shorter manes. I can't recall the names of the species that roamed Persia, the Middle East, and southern Europe, but they all existed, though of course most of them are gone now. Offhand I'd say the ones that would be particularly interesting would be a lion fur from Egypt, from Persia, or from Italy (or Rome specifically).
