They may have overplayed the power of such a battery in that it would start that farm tractor. That's if i am remembering the film correctly, still it's an interesting level of thought that the writers put into a kids movie. Especially the science vs religion subplot.
Nimh was also the best battery tech they had at the time(circa 1982), if it was made today. Or remade as things are it would most likely be cgi with her carrying around a staff made from a lipol(lithium polymer) battery.
