Warrior of Purgatory [comm]
Two sharpshooters from the Beasts tribe waited on a balcony in one of Bindu's tallest buildings. Rain pattered against the stone roof and trickled down gritty frescoes depicting gods and demons battling each other. Vassily sat quietly against a concrete wall, with his custom-built rifle resting against his shoulder.
With a ruffle, the young male rabbit next to him suddenly sat up with ears twitching. "Alright, Inaba, take survey position and report." said the ice-white wolfman, upon noticing.
Inaba raised a small tube periscope over the edge of the balcony. "Three unidentified targets approaching tribe city Bindu from the Southwest." Vassily lifted a rectangular mirror, and surveyed the grey wasteland of broken buildings and craters set under a cloudy sky of constantly falling rain. "Vanguards. No issue of warning. It's a hostile action."
The rabbit immediately lined up his gun and fired a shot towards the incoming assailants, ending the life of a orange-marked soldier in a cloud of nerve bundles and blood. Vassily pressed a button on a device attached to his belt, sending an alert to the front guard.
One of the soldiers raised a hand with a white cloth, but only for a few seconds before he convulsed and dropped to his knees onto the ground.
"That one was surrendering, so we... what is that?" Inaba's eyes were wide open, and he did not speak further. Vassily's brows furrowed, and he carefully raised his head just over the balcony's edge.
The soldier was no longer on his knees, because he no longer had any to kneel on. Whoever it was, it was now a grotesque creature with multiple chomping jaws and sharp teeth on what Vassily assumed was its shoulders.
The wolf loaded up a round, and fired it into what he assumed was its head. The remaining soldier hid behind a ruined wall half-buried into the ground.
Right about then, the sound of an explosion in the distance distracted Vassily enough to have his eye off the rifle scope for a second. He quickly loaded another bullet into his gun, and returned his focus on his remaining target. As the crosshairs searched the area, he caught the sight of a rifle barrel aimed into his left eye.
This was followed by a muzzle flash, like a period at the end of a grim sentence.
However, at the same time, streams of light emerged from the West, and with great speed penetrated his and Inaba's bodies. Vassily winced when one of the beams struck him through his right arm, and in this split-second motion, the bullet shattered his scope instead of his skull.
Vassily remembered nothing of what happened between that time and when he finally woke up.
When he came to, there was no one around him, only pieces of meat and bone. There was a terrible pain on the left side of his face, but he could not let that concern him then. He noticed a set of finger bones on the floor before him, and a tag ring which looked a lot like Inaba's. He reached out to pick up the ring, and noticed a black mark on his arm where the light had struck him. Vassily tried to ignore the taste of blood in his mouth.
He sat there, thinking quietly about what has transpired, before sharp pain wrested his attention again. Vassily touched his face where the pain was, and pressed gently on his left eyelid. A gel-like substance leaked out onto his fingers.
"... and that's how he became Dead Eye Vassily." said Ravind to the young woman.
"What are you two doing here?" said a tall wolfman with ice-white fur, who scrutinized the two Beasts tribe soldiers with one unpatched eye. "You heard the Temple's standing order. Go out there and bring us the cybershaman. Junkyard's no place for slackers."
"Yes, sir! To Nirvana!" said the both of them in unison.
Vassily scoffed. "You'll have to earn it first."

Digital Devil Saga is an offshoot of a videogame series called Shin Megami Tensei, all of which deal with deep and very dark philosophical themes.
