He’s the one
Who likes all our pretty songs,
And he likes to sing along,
And he likes to shoot his gun.

Replying partially to this and partially to your recent LJ - I'm totally with you about a lot of Old West (broadly defined) figures having a little "Player Character" sign written over their heads. I mean, Texas alone gives us a legion of crazies, and the New Mexico-Colorado-Wyoming-Montana stripe is under-appreciated, I reckon. Then there's Utah with the religious flavor and Arizona with silver and vestiges of the Spanish Empire. Nevada and silver, Bleeding Kansas - all sorts crazy shit. And I only know the white-people history vaguely, and you know the First Nations history more than vaguely. There's so much room! You should totally do it.
I've seen actual guns like that, from before the days of cartridge amunition, but the most recent I've ever seen would have been ancient by the west. Though, those mountain men tended to keep around and us a lot of old black powder weapons. Like, the Southern army was still heavily using muskets in the civil war.
omg, the old fellow looks like he should be in a John Wayne flick! I love the look of his beard and his outfit. Im also digging the fellow in the back right, he reminds me of a Nuwisha a friend played in a werewolf game once. Very big fan of the western stuff and these characters seem like they would fit in fine.
Now that I'm on a computer that can do YouTube without crashing; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmyNqO6LAvQ
Really, this is my pick for the second best western movie ever made. The quadruple barreled shotgun is actually one of the lesscool parts of the film.

Here's a good write up about it http://tml.travellercentral.com/hil.....erg/index.html and it even includes another more insane gun made by the same guy for colt, an 8 barreled shotgun. This site shows the patent drawings: http://www.google.com/patents?id=peJpAAAAEBAJ&dq=3260009
Sadly, I can't seem to find a good front on picture of it. I have a book on Winchester firearms that has not only good shots from multiple angles, but also the advertisement from when they, out of desperation due to the canceled military contract, tried to market them for home defense.
I sure do love weird guns... and I love that they're a great way to cement a series as alternate history. Like, the Liberator would be a great centerpiece in an alternate version of the 50's.
