A gun dog is a dog/breed used to either retrieve shot animals or to flush animals out to be shot during hunts.
A retrieving gun dog will wait until the you shoot the animal and will then go find it and bring it to you. A flushing gun dog will go out a scare animals (Usually birds) in to the open so they can be shot. Hunters will often use both a retriever and a flusher in unison the flusher will drive it into the open, the hunter will shoot it then the retriever will bring it to you.
