I recently returned from a vacation to New England and while I was up there I visited with Scotty again. Scotty has a habit of bringing sketchbooks wherever he goes and is always adding something interesting to it and commented about how I don't have a sketchbook. The reason for that began long, long ago while I was in art college. I developed a distaste for sketchbooks because I prefer to use the whole page to sketch with, and sketchbooks stack those pages up such that if you try drawing along the edges your hand angles awkwardly off the pile making it very hard to draw properly. Consequently anytime you see me drawing it will always be on loose paper which I carry around in an envelope. Loose paper also guarantees perfect results on a flatbed scanner.
Not to be stopped however Scotty handed me his little 4x6 sketchbook and told me to draw in it when we went out to eat and I gamely went along with it. While the venues we visited certainly played a part in the pictures I ended up drawing this first picture was what got the ball rolling as I initially just sketched out Opal leaping forwards to grab ahold of something and then I passed the book over to Scotty to determine what exactly she'd be going for. "Hey, I was hungry, what did you expect?"
