The only thing I find odd about this story is how quickly the USS Bayonet fell to the Cardassian ship. The Sovereign class was one of Starfleet’s newest and most powerful warships, designed primarily to slug it out with the Borg, who as we know were ridiculously powerful. We saw for example, the USS Enterprise-E slug it out with the Scimitar, an extremely advanced and powerful Romulan warbird, and the Enterprise held her own, taking numerous heavy salvos from the Scimitar without her shields failing. As we saw, once the Scimitar lost her cloak, the Enterprise seemed to be at least the equal of the Scimitar. The only reason she ended up having to ram the Scimitar was that she had basically shot her self dry, with no torpedoes remaining, and low power on the phasers. If her magazines had been loaded to full wartime capacity, rather than just a peacetime load out, she probably could have killed the Scimitar without ramming her. It just seems to me that the Bayonet fell a bit too fast, especially to what was basically an assault carrier, though an extremely heavily armed one. Especially since the Enterprise went toe to toe with what can only be classified as a dreadnought and held her own.
Other than that, the story is great!!

thank you for the kind words. :) its been a while since i heard someone read this little short story of mine and I'm pleased you enjoy it. *smiles happily*
thinking back on it i most likely should have used a vessel of a different type then the Sov. class but at the time it was the most recognizable to me, this story was suppose to invoke emotion and the ship in question was to loose. I was having some bleak moments while in school when i came up with it and also turned an modified version for a class project on writing.
I suppose at the time I felt it would be more shocking if it was a Sovereign that fell, the Hutet as far as i remember it though was an massively powerful vessel then just an assault carrier, and if you got caught in its forward weapon arcs it tends to be a really bad day for the intended victim as it was meant to be a dreadnought and planetary bombardment assault ship in the lore. the cut scenes of it in battle from the DS9 Dominion war video game always made it appear weaker then when it was used in game. I remember playing one mission where one of the damn things held up against 4 galaxy class at the same time due to the cardassian shield refit and hull refit upgrades, and I used that as the base of why it was so durable and took a full on ram to defeat. though thinking on it and reading it again I downplayed the level of the damage of the opening salvo of the Cardassian vessel. Having just warped in unleashed everything crossed with taking the Bayonet by surprise did rather appalling level of damage before they began the duel as its suppose to be implied the Bayonet's shields were down.
though speed how fast it happens i can see where your coming from and as it was meant to be a short story i didn't want to go on for pages talking about the back and forth when the end result was decided for the narrative. so i do apologize for that. over all i am glad you enjoyed it thank you Legogamer :)

What you could do would be to put a Galaxy class ship in place of the Sovereign. We have seen many times before that the Galaxy is no pushover, being for a time the most advanced and powerful Starfleet vessel in existence. The Galaxies are tough, no question about it. But the Sovereigns are warships first and foremost, though they still serve as very capable multi mission explorers. The Galaxies were designed as explorers first and foremost, along with the fact that the Sovereigns are a newer design, with better tech and lessons learned from fighting the Borg. Along with the fact that the Galaxy class is just as well known as the Sovereign class, if not more so.
Or you could state in the story that the Hutet did more than just knock out the warp drive. You could have bridge officers report destroyed or damaged EPS relays that would prevent the shield from coming up at full strength or regen, or that loading mechanisms had been damaged so the Bayonet couldn’t use her full arsenal of photonic and quantum torpedos. If you could just show that the Bayonet had taken severe damage in the opening salvo, enough to dramatically reduce her combat potential, I think it would work out great!
It’s just that an assault carrier, unless it has in excess of dreadnought levels of fire power, which admittedly the Hutet sort of does, is going to be at a disadvantage compared to a warship of similar size, simply because the carrier’s primary mission is to land an invasion force, and in order to do that, large amounts of space that would otherwise be dedicated to power generation, weapons, and shielding is taken up by all of the equipment needed to carry, land, support, and supply said ground force.
