OMG GET ONE! : D
1) pick a species. Colubrids are poop machines, but very pretty. Get something from reptile rescue if you can, if you want something more uncommon get in contact with your local reptile club and they can probably help.
2) set up, get everything ready before you get the snake. Craigslist is awesome for cheap aquariums. Pine, cedar, and sand are all substrates NOT to use. I use news paper and aspen for my various boys. Under tank heaters are the best, better than lights or heat rocks.
3) Don't feed live, the snakes don't care and it's much safer/cheaper to buy frozen mice bulk.
Snakes are super cute, easy to clean up after, cheap to feed, and can be left on their own for a week no problem. They are quiet. Basically, the best pet ever, I wanted a fish at one point but when I looked into the care required I was like "naaaah to much work I'll just get another snake". OMG I'm gonna go make a post about my boys now.
