The Sorceress hurried about her lab, dropping another stack of books onto the heavy oaken table, the dust puffing out around them in a small cloud. She turned, looking over the mess of her workspace and sighed, mentally running through the lengthy checklist of what she still needed to do. She frowned, wondering what she could manage putting off. Her new home was in a sorry state, a crumbling tower long ago abandoned by some forgotten mage. Still, it was worth the work, she mused. Wizards towers were hard to come by in the realm, especially one with such ample dungeon space for her experiments. There was a small village nearby as well, a definite benefit. As she went about her work, she mused about one of the local village boys that had caught her eye, a quiet but well built apprentice blacksmith. She picked up another pile of books, not sure of where she wanted to put them. She scowled, annoyed that she had to spend her day moving things around. If only there were some way to speed the process up.
The thought came to her suddenly. A familiar might do the trick. If nothing else, it was something to keep her company. She pulled out her grimoire, her most powerful spellbook, and began flipping through the dusty pages. She found what she was looking for fairly easily (The grimoire had a habit of opening near the pages she wanted.) Idly, she pondered what she wanted. Rats and toads were simple, but hardly made for good companions. A raven perhaps, a wolf if she was feeling ambitious? In the end, she decided to keep things simple and traditional. A cat would do well.
The sorceress began to focus her mind, channeling her magical power through her body into her wand, the crystal orb set within the golden claw beginning to glow. She imagined the cat, trying to picture it properly. It was difficult, as she was tired from work, but she continued. Things would be easier with a familiar. Her mind began to wander as she imagined all the things she would be able to do with assistance, the spells she would be able to try out. The pages of her grimoire began to rustle as the energy within the room began to generate a slight wind around her. Idly, she glanced down at the spellbook, smiling to herself at the page that came up. A love spell, of all things, to make oneself irresistible to the chosen target. She would need to try that one out on the village boy. She thought about the boy working the forges early that day, feeling a little hot. A sudden crack of magical energy startled her back to the task at hand, bringing the image of a cat back into her head. Something was wrong though...
