Tally catches a bit of their conversation from across the fire, the crackling half drowning out what they say, and, for a second, she thinks about chiming in that, yeah, she's going to keep an eye out for him, too. But, well, Kit seems calm and like himself again and maybe it's just not something she needs to say. Maybe it's just something she can sit on until it's needed. Maybe just saying it won't ever actually be needed.
But, as she watches Kit head to his tent and Havine back to the fire to watch over dinner, the urge to just talk to him keeps tugging at her until she gives in and heads over to his tent. She's not sure what she'll say or if it'll even help, but... fuck it, might as well try, right?
"Kit? You got a sec?"
He looks up from trying to push Gnawdy's legs over to one side of the blanket. Apparently "stay" only applies to her body as far as she's concerned. Kit nods at Tally as he settles himself between two ridiculously long legs.
Tally snickers and reaches out to pat Gnawdy and give her scritches like she's seen Kit do. She's still wary of the spider, but there's no denying she did good earlier. Tally can't tell if Gnawdy even likes what she's doing, but she thinks she hears that weird... clicking, purring noise.
"So, hey, I'm not one to get all in your business and stuff, but, uh..." Tally sighs, pulling her hand back from Gnawdy. "Jeez, Kit. You ok? I know you don't talk about things a lot but... I mean, I just-" she sighs again, brushing her hair back out of her face. "I dunno. I don't know where I was going with this. I just want to make sure everything's ok and, y'know," Tally gives him a half grin that doesn't quite reach her eye, "check in on my bro and all that."
He grins. "Bro. I am always okay. I'm more worried about you two worrying yourselves sick." He rests his chin in his hands. "I have something for that, you know."
"I know, you've got something for everything," Tally says, rolling her eye at him. "All I'm saying is if something's bugging you, I'm almost literally all ears. Besides, it can't be any crazier than literally trying to stop an evil dragon goddess and her cult, right?"
He giggles. "They are pretty impressive. And you're right, it's nowhere near that crazy." Kit resettles himself and smiles up at her. "How about this. I'll answer one question for every fact you tell me about where you came from."
Tally laughs. "You're not gonna pull any punches, are you? But, fair is fair," she says, reaching back to untie her eyepatch. "What kind of facts are you after, exactly? I think I told you about how I'm from Altissia up in the northeast..."
Kit squints as she reaches back, and shrugs. "You decide what the question is worth."
Unsettled, Tally lets her eyepatch fall loose, revealing her perfectly healthy right eye. She's not sure what to start with, so she starts with the basic facts. "My full name is Elinoa Taldel. I grew up the daughter of a merchant in Altissia until he got sick and-" she looks over at Kit, trying to gauge his reaction, but he seems as impassive as ever. "And I never met my mother. She left before I was old enough to remember." Tally laughs under her breath. "I wouldn't even recognize her if we bumped into each other on the street."
About a minute of silence passes as Tally tries to think of something to ask. She's not sure what she's told him is 'worth' what she really wants to know, but she's equally unsure of what exactly it's 'worth' in the first place.
"Who are these people after you?"
Kitrick hides his surprise when the eyepatch falls. He knows well enough to not underestimate anyone who seems at a disadvantage, but he's still fascinated. Kit deliberates for a second before he starts talking, staring straight at Tally.
"The Order of the Dark Moon. I was there for thirteen years. My sister still is, if she's alive, at the service of Shar. Our parents dropped us off there so that we would be... cared for." There's a hint of a sneer on his face. "I'm still not sure if they knew what it was."
His expression evens out again. "Why do you wear that?"
Tally's not sure what to make of what he's telling her. She knows enough to know that Shar generally isn't a good deity and her worshippers generally aren't, either. It's beyond her how anyone could possibly leave kids with a group like that, even unknowingly. She can't imagine it screamed 'safe, loving environment for kids,' even on the outside.
It seems almost cold of her to ignore that and move on to answering his question, but she gets the feeling that trying to be comforting about such an old hurt wouldn't do either of them any good. So, she moves on.
"When my dad got sick, a lot of the people he worked with," she starts, her voice shaking just a bit, "turned their backs on us. He did so much to help them, make sure their families were taken care of when they left on long trips, and they just-"
Tally shakes her head. She's trying not to let the hurt bubble back up. It doesn't do any good to let it out, not when it's from so long ago and it doesn't even have anything to do with her right now. She takes a deep breath, closes her eyes, and lets the air out slowly. Better. Not great, but better.
"I don't want to wait until I'm broken to see who won't help," she says, meeting Kitrick's eyes with as much determination as she can muster. "Now, my turn. Why do they want you so bad?"
He reaches out to pat her knee. She looks like some kind of comfort might help, and he needs time to think of what he can safely tell her.
"They asked me to do something I couldn't." He leans back and stares past Tally. "Nobody leaves the Lady of Loss without losing themselves. I got lucky being alive this long. Her clergy pride themselves on holding a grudge."
"So they're going to be after you no matter what, huh?" Tally asks quietly. "Is there anything we can do to stop them for good or...?"
"I have a plan! And also a possible ally." He smiles widely at her. "Don't worry. Like you said, this isn't as crazy as a five-headed dragon."
"Well, just so you know, you've got more than one ally in this." Tally smiles back at him. "I know I can't speak for anyone else, but... I'm pretty sure we'd all go to bat for you, bud. We're all in this together, y'know?"
He reaches over and scratches Gnawdy behind her eyes. Kit turns and gives her the same wide-eyed smile he gave Havine. "I know."
But, as she watches Kit head to his tent and Havine back to the fire to watch over dinner, the urge to just talk to him keeps tugging at her until she gives in and heads over to his tent. She's not sure what she'll say or if it'll even help, but... fuck it, might as well try, right?
