Might I suggest OpenCanvas? Its Water Color tool is very easy to use when it comes to gradients and 'happy accidents'. Unless you're used to real media, in which case Painter might be more up your alley; it breaks my head though. (Simulated) real paint doesn't always behave intuitively. c.c;
