For my CG 201 class, we were basically given a set of greyscale markers and a couple sheets of vellum, and drew 8 unique abstract landscape-like doodles. We then took these doodles and scanned them into photoshop. Playing around with layers and layer mechanics produced the image above as a small section of the original.
