kjets. This time we're in "Triss", where traveling companions Sagax the badger and Kroova the otter have had it with their friend Scarum the hare eating up all their rations, and so decide to take drastic action to keep their food safe.
Scarum doesn't appreciate their efforts at all. ;)

The Mary Sue of infamous Harry Potter badfic My Immortal. Her introduction in the first chapter is a long rambling list of all her "goffik" Hot Topic clothing and ends with "A lot of preps stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them." That's the one which has Dumbledore addressing misbehaving students with "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING YOU MOTHERF*KERS!" (yes, she missed out the C from f**k).
Or how about a badger as the guy in notorious magazine cover "Weasels Ripped My Flesh"?: http://www.cracked.com/blog/the-7-m.....e-covers-ever/ BEAT THEM WITH THEIR OWN KIND!
The same site has a bunch of articles about these stag mag covers, and they're all like that (warnings for bad language):

The comments below the articles are worth a read too. My fave was the one pointing to the guy in bell-bottoms on one cover and saying "Okay, I can buy WW2 Japanese female soldiers in high heels, but a time traveller?"

There seems to be a space between the o and the m in the ".com" bit, copy it and take that out. They had another article which mentioned how the damsels in distress on these magazine covers always look more surprised than frightened, or sometimes annoyed; "I'm not drowning next to that b*tch Janice!"

Heh, heh... well, that's one way of keeping a hare from pinching all the tucker...
But yeah, Scarum totally deserved that... as a rule, I like hares and otters and suchlike, but Scarum's absolute gluttony throughout that book rather turned me off of him as a character.
Basil Stag Hare, Tarquin L Woodsorrel Cleckstarr Lepus Montisle... these hares could all eat for Mossflower, but at least they had some consideration for their friends - like if someone was off their food, they would at least ask, "Are you going to eat that?"
Scarum would just scoff everything in sight, regardless of whether it meant hardworking beasts had to go hungry... ¬_¬

And the sad thing is, he never learned his lesson or ever really got a good comeuppance.... well, no, in the end Sagax did chase him around kicking him. XD So I guess there's that. Still, though, I'd be tempted to have Scarum be killed off in any TV/movie adaption, except that might be a little harsh.
Agreed. :( If anything, the Freebooters should have been 'adopted' by the Redwallers and taught better... Heh, I once imagined how I would do a movie version of "Triss", and ended up imagining Skipper (who's a descendant of Tagg) taking over the Freebooters, who make him their new captain because he reminds them somewhat of Plugg. At first Skipper doesn't want the position, but then relents and turns them into a more respectable group.
As for what happened in the book, at least Grubbage was allowed to live. :) Though Scummy should have been allowed to live as well... but then again, there's nowhere that said he died, either. So maybe he ran off... who's to say?

Yeah... I didn't like those otters very much, if at all. I hated how they learned absolutely *nothing* in the end. They came in, proclaiming all vermin are evil, blah blah blah, and nothing changes for them.
I remember the part where that one green-eyed fox (I forget his name at the moment) appeared, and I remember thinking, "Oh please, PLEASE, Jacques, PLEASE make this guy one of your heroes!"
But no. Just another evil fox. And if you think about it, he didn't really do anything that was really all that evil... well, he did murder an otter character (a little kid one, I believe), but it didn't feel "natural", if that makes any sense. Here's what I mean: this fox and his tribe come in when the heroes have trespassed on their land. I can't remember what happened exactly, but I think the foxes either were going to kill them, or were just threatening them.
Either way, the foxes were treated as being completely in the wrong... and yet the Rogue Crew were explicitly stated to do the exact same thing when the book introduced them: they shot vermin on sight and never bothered to ask questions.
So really, the Rogue Crew felt a little like "designated heroes". Plus, the fact that that one fox went after them and shot that one young otter felt... well, pointless. Why would the fox do something so foolish, especially when he was presented as being rather smart? Why would he want revenge? It all felt like Jacques just brought this guy in just for the sake of killing one character and then being killed himself. No point whatsoever.
Had it been up to me, the fox and his tribe would have joined our heroes - not because they're necessarily *good*, but because they realize the threat that Razzid Wearet would have on their home, and decide to join forces with the Rogue Crew for the greater good. At the end of it all, the foxes would have departed back to their own territory without any trouble, which would have caused some members of the Rogue Crew to think twice about their own philosophy.
Would have felt a little more gratifying, if you ask me. X)

Yeah, I don't really remember much about the story, apart from Crumdum the stoat, who had to be rescued by the Long Patrol hares (he was, after all, THEIR prisoner) to prevent the otters from torturing him to death over what information he didn't know... and at least he escaped and had a chance to make a new life for himself in peace.
But yeah, having a tribe of foxes turn out as "neutral good" at best would have been a nice break from the norm.
This was the last book Brian Jacques published before he died... I wonder if he was sick when he wrote it, so not really in a state to think through some original new ideas...

Yes, I'm glad Jacques had mercy on Crumdum. Although I still wish Crumdum got to live out the rest of his days in the care of the Abbey. Sigh, oh well. We gotta take what we can get sometimes.
Ketral Vane, that was the name of that one fox leader! But yes, I would have had them be "neutral good", and once Razzid Wearet was defeated, the foxes would have quietly retreated to their own territory without any fuss. X)
Hard to say if Jacques was sick when he wrote the book. He died of heart failure, so maybe not.

Also got to say I do like how you drew Sagax. Muscular but still pretty lean. I do like the more typical broad and squat look for badgers, but I do like seeing the occasional leaner ones.
Mind I also wouldn't mind seeing him and Kroova tied up and gagged too lol XD

Fair enough as he would be strong but still developing before he becomes the more bulky, giants I think many of us think of the badger as. Same with Sunflash (who is my 2nd favorite Redwall character) and Gorath, among others.
Yeah I could see that as a scene of it when they and Scaraum have been captured by vermin. Sagax struggling and grunting with muffled anger through his gag as the vermin mock him, "Just treating a mountain prince proper!"

Yeah though fortunately for a our three boys, Triss and Shogg showed up just in the nick of time before anything really bad could happen; plus even if Triss and Shogg did not come in, I'm pretty sure my boi Martin's spirit would have found someone to rescue them.
Though for bondage fanart, I don't think anything really bad would happen to Sagax and the others. After all not many days that some Freebooters get their hands on a badger prince. Very good ransom or a slave for Riftgard. Or just have tied up and gagged in corner to be the Freebooters "pet"; might never know when Plugg would run into other pirate captains, he would want to bring out the trio in a "Heh your loot is nothing. Lookit what we caught. Just ran into them while doin' a job for them prissy white ferrets at Riftgard. Jealous?" type of move, hehehehe.
