This is a leather-bound book-of-shadows I was commissioned to make for a friend that I work with.

Actually, we just got back from a trip to Tennessee to an underground lake, and we've been out and about most of the latter half of this week :) In truth, the curved pieces were somewhat easier to do than the one I made for you and the previous piece I did years ago. I made a cardboard cut-out of the entire book's length, then I cut the pieces as they would appear on the finished leather pieces, and then used them as stencils. As far as stitching goes, I got a new brass needle with a screw-in end that you just wind the leather thong into (Hobby Lobby and made by Tandy Crafts!), which made threading the leather soooo much less hectic. And of course, my trusty Crop-a-dile to punch the holes. Each hole is almost exactly half and inch from the two adjacent from it. I really wish I'd taken a picture before I bound it; the design is reversed on both sides, minus the burning on the back. If I can get my webcam working with my new computer, I'll make a video and put it on youtube or something for the next book I make.
(I've got several pages going in mine, but hieroglyphs take up a lot of space when you're using a reed pen) :)

Wow! :) that's freakin' amazing stuff.
I have some more of the paper that I used in your journal that makes that neat almost-square size, but I don't think a big book (500 pages singlesided) would be very good to deal with binding-wise >0< (ie: my next one I'm daydreaming about... xD I hate filling up new books, so sad when they're full!)
The binding you do - with the leather going through the holes and knotted on either end- does that last very long? I"m curious 'cause I've been eyeing mine and wondering if it's really that simple or if I should try doing the stitching method I did if I made an uber-big journal. (Too poor to afford to make a leather one, but it's a nifty idea to mess with in my head.)
Youtube how-tos: YES!!!

Actually, the way that I bound yours and the new one I just did; if you look at the stitched parts, you can see that I used bonding glue on the tips to keep them from untying, but if you look at the three places where the pages are bound through; you can see that the tips are a bit longer and there's no bonding glue. So if need be, pages can be removed and/or replaced. The older books that I've still got around with leather bindings are in good shape, the only negative thing is that you'll need to keep them dry. One of my smaller books got a little damp from sitting in my trunk beneath something that was wet in the summer time, and the leather stained the pages. But so long as it's dry, there shouldn't be much problem.
