I was enamored by the slippery little guy from the newest Kirby trailer, so I used him as practice. Experimenting with more natural-looking shapes.

Cheating? the only time you cheat in art is when you trace or eye copy.
just because one style is easier and/or harder to execute doesn't make it a superior or inferior style on it's own, in the end the goal is to convey something, and if you do it well then that's all that matters.
That kind of thinking leads to stagnant art styles, where everyone adheres to a set "right way" to do artwork.
