Most of the time I would just start with a blank canvas.
For this I sketched with the idea of making most of it flat, but it was just a really rough sketch.
I like to refine my sketch as I paint, but that method usually only works when I'm painting for my own things.
For commissions I would need to have a clearer sketch before going in to painting.
