Yep. Cops. Long before I married my wife, they dragged her out of her car and laid her over the hood when she was seven months pregnant. They had her then husband out and on the ground, guns drawn. Why? Because their car looked like one that had been reported as used in a crime (except for being the wrong color), and they thought my wife looked too young to be driving it. They kept asking "do your parents know where you kids are?" when they could have looked at the licenses and seen they had the same last name. When they finally figured out they had two innocent people who had done nothing wrong, they just sent them off with a warning. No apology, nothing. To this day, she hates cops intensely.
Another friend of mine was waiting for her husband to pick her up. When he did, the cops pulled them over. When they said why they pulled them over, she couldn't stop laughing long enough to explain. Both of them are social workers in their sixties, a little overweight with grey hair, but the cops thought she looked like a hooker. I've had friends who were cops, but until the good ones take the bad ones out back behind a building and beat the stupid out of them, they all get the same rep. Taze that grandma!

There will be a trial, but he will have a "Reasonable Defense". in protecting a family member from an assault.
added to which the fact that they were plainclothes officers, instead of Uniformed Officers, may add to that defense.

After reading the last page I started to suspect this twist. It's happened before in real life, too (fortunately not to me or anyone I personally know). Yeah, probably vice cops thinking Picca looked and acted like a streetwalker (well, in that dress and the attitude she was giving I can't blame them). They thought it was a clean bust. From what's been shown I don't know if they were cutting corners on their procedures.
Sure, Jim has "all I knew was 2-3 guys were attacking her" as a defense, but he hit cops. It's pretty close to a no-win situation.

We had something like that in Atlanta a year or so ago. A "special" squad got careless, and invaded an 80 year old woman's house. She had a gun, knew how to use it. When they discovered that they had just killed an innocent woman, they tried to cover it up by forcing an informant to lie about buying drugs there.
They (the former cops) are all behind bars now, mostly for the cover up. The shooting was actually sort of legit I suppose. I am glad that I don't need to make THAT judgment. A bunch of people in plain clothes bust your door down. Do you shoot? Personally, no. They would probably be wearing body armor, and even if you did kill one, the others will shoot. Bad odds.
There is no telling how much those idiots hurt the fight against illegal drugs.
