Venti looked in the mirror, wondering how in the world could the weather be cold enough in June to make his winter coat come in. His cheekruffs were shaggy. SHAGGY. He hadn't needed the gel to smooth it down during winter, but today he'd need it.
"Venti," he said to his reflection, "you're going to have one of those weird days." He put on his apron, flashing a toothy grin. For a brief moment, he considered going shaggy to work, then immediately decided against it. Even if his hours had gone the way of the dollar comics, it was still a wise idea to behave himself.
"You look like a hippie," announced a voice from behind him.
"I'm about to look like a closed door," he said to his little brother, who leaned up against the doorjamb.
In response, Ted moved into the bathroom, folding his arms on the counter as he looked at Venti's reflection. "Closed doors are never fun."
"Oh?"
Ted nodded, looking at his reflection now. His fur was already starting to grow back, reducing the number of bald spots on his person. "I always wonder what's going on behind them. Can't stand a closed door, other than the outside door."
"You got a weird view on doors, kiddo."
"You still look like a hippie."
Venti patted Ted's head, then palmed it like a basketball, giving it a light shake. "Ah, the ever famous West wit. Don't give up your day job when you get one, little brother."
Ted pushed away Venti's hand. "Very funny. I'm taking it easy this summer before I go back to school."
"Wise beyond your years, you are."
"Yeah, I figure if I can't be like you and get by on my good looks, I'll just own the magazine you model for."
"You as a corporate shark scares me."
"I'll be more ruthless than Donald Trump."
Venti arched an eyebrow. "Will you have better hair than him?"
"I'll make him look like you, a hippie." Ted glanced at Venti's reflection again. "Only a lot skinnier. Have you ever thought about not being wider than a barn door? You might get around easier."
"Where's the fun in that?"
