Alright.
Recently, a friend turned me onto an RPG called Toon, and I have to say it's a lot of fun. Normally I don't like RPGs, primarily because I'm bad at them. However, Toon takes full advantage of cartoon physics, so as a result, nobody ever dies, you just fall down for a little while. Since nobody can die, there is essentially no way to fail, resulting in much fun. The only problem is that it's the total opposite of serious, so good luck finding some people to RP with. Luckily, I found a few. Also, the game is quite old and the book is out of print, and I'm pretty sure they're not releasing any new books or expansions. Two of the books can be bought and downloaded ad PDF files from the official site. Also, as a random side note, it was developed by Warren Spector! You know, the guy who made Deus Ex, Thief, and System Shock.
Anyways, so after doing a couple campaigns and getting a feel for it, I found a campaign called Ars Tragica on an unofficial website, and I suggested we play it. So one of my friends volunteered to be the animator (dungeon master) for the campaign, and he gave me the responsibility of writing a basic script for him to follow (it's not that he's uncreative, he just knows I write better than he does). I was honored. Anyways, so this is a dramatization of a portion of our first session that I adapted from a transcription of the session. My character is Bavard, by the way. Yes I'm weird, don't judge me.
Combining a fleshed-out fantasy RPG with cartoonish slapstick violence is harder than it sounds, and this is reflected in this first chapter. You'll find that this chapter isn't spectacularly wacky, and that's because the exposition was sort of glossed over in the actual session, while I tried to expand it and put more character development here. Yes, Dribble does not seem like he really has a personality at this point, but that'll change in later chapters. So it might not seem that cartoony now, but trust me, slapstick has a tendency to happen more frequently during conflict, which is definitely coming soon. So, hang tight, I had a lot of fun playing and writing this, part 2 will be up soon.
