Another part of a series of small acrylic paintings of pigeons in Catholic settings or wardrobe. This one is 8.5in x 5.5in in size.
The idea behind these paintings was NOT to belittle the image of the Catholic religion, but instead raise the image of the pigeon as a sort of patron saint of city life. Doves are a common symbol of the Holy Ghost in the Christian/Catholic religion, and seen as a graceful and beautiful bird of hope. The common city pigeon, on the other hand, is often considered vermin or a "rat with wings". However, most people fail to recognize that the pigeon is, in fact, part of the same family as the dove, simply a different breed.
There is a wide variety of pigeons, and pigeon breeding is a very old hobby.
This one is based off of a mosaic from a church of a seraphim angel, which was an angel seen with 6 wings: a pair to cover the eyes/face, a pair to cover the body, and a pair to cover the feet.
This painting features the head of a seraphim pigeon, a breed known for its plumage on the head, body, and feet.
BTW, this WASN'T meant to be serious! Part of the idea was to challenge the pretentious nature of religious folk and artists both.
