A series of small (2.5in x 3.5in) acrylic paintings of pigeons in Catholic settings or wardrobe.
The idea behind these paintings was NOT to belittle the image of the Catholic religion, but instead raise the image of the pigeon as a sort of patron saint of city life. Doves are a common symbol of the Holy Ghost in the Christian/Catholic religion, and seen as a graceful and beautiful bird of hope. The common city pigeon, on the other hand, is often considered vermin or a "rat with wings". However, most people fail to recognize that the pigeon is, in fact, part of the same family as the dove, simply a different breed.
There is a wide variety of pigeons, and pigeon breeding is a very old hobby. Some of the pigeons represented in this series (in the order that they appear) are:
Row 1: Prayer for His Holiness the Pope (rock dove), Prayer to St.Francis (monk pigeon), Sacred Bleeding Heart Pigeon (bleeding heart pigeon), The Last Supper (multiple pigeons of no particular breed), Prayer to Saint Theresa (nun pigeon), Prayer to St.Joseph (rock pigeon)
Row 2: Lucifer (jacobin pigeon), Prayer for Health and Guidance (based of a footless pigeon that lives in the subway station here in Chicago), Prayer to Mother Theresa (random pigeon w/egg), Holy Ghost (rock pigeon), [Untitled-Martyrdom] (rock pigeon), [Untitled] (rock pigeon).
BTW, this WASN'T meant to be serious! Part of the idea was to challenge the pretentious nature of religious folk and artists both.

This is like a nightmare for me, as a gargoyle and a mortal enemy of pigeons, its like the lunatics taking over the asylum! >.<
Actually there are interesting analogies here with the pigeon being used as a messenger bird for so long and the messengers of god. Hehe.
Lovely images!
