I wanted to share a series of pics from Japan that showcase the cute, the wonderful, the weird and the WTF that embodies Japan with an eye mostly toward things of a furry nature. This is one of many such photos submitted to that end. Please enjoy this little window shōji into a very intriguing country. =3
We rounded a corner in the Ebisuhigashi shopping district and encountered this strange and horrifying place. Clearly a very specific and specialized hell set aside for the torment of parents who don't buy enough Sanrio swag for their kids.
Painted in eye-burning pinks, this surreal parking lot seemed oddly abandoned. I suspect that no adult would ever park there unless relentlessly harangued by their children to do so. The oversight that children cannot legally drive and thus cannot decide where to park the car seems like it may prove to be the undoing for this lot.
Even the lamp posts were felinized and the beverage machine was also converted into a garish montage of cartoon characters. Not even the asphalt was spared The Pinkening.

Middle-aged Japanese women are just as crazy about Disney and Sanrio as kids if not moreso. I wouldn't underestimate them.
I remember being in a Yamada Denki picking out a mobile phone and pointing out the Disney Mobile stuff to a Japanese colleague. When I asked if it was something made for kids, he just kind of shook his head.

In many lots, when you pay to park, that barrier raises up under the vehicle to prevent it leaving without paying. Those are everywhere. This particular arrangement probably flattens down as you drive into the space and then locks back in the up position until payment unlocks it again so you can drive back over it.
overcast day might have slowed things and it was probably a week day too so perhaps the wrong day and time? Also, rail is just so damn convenient I'm sure it limits how many cars go there. Station was a few blocks away so it was a good choice if you don't mind the walk. Parking seemed to be about $5-$6 USD at many lots which doesn't appear too egregious compared to parking in a city here.
