Dragonsergal featuring his Sergal character as a Landsknecht mercenary.
The Landsknechts were mercenary infantry of the Late Medieval and Renaissance era in the german-speaking parts of Europe, typically equipped with spears, halberds and later muskets. These men often had to bring their own equipment and were hired in huge numbers at times of war, especially during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). To recruit them in high numbers they were paid very little wages, but instead they were given permission to take their share from looting or to confiscate provisions from the local population, often leaving the people of entire regions to starvation. This measure was used to efficiently create large and disposable armies withinin short time.
Fun fact: These men often wore offensive, colorful and female clothes. It is believed that they mainly tried to show off their superior status above the customs of society, very much so to the offense of the church which might have been the whole point of it.
