INSPIRATION;I joined the fandom back in 2012 and one of the first things I found was telephone. I loved their performance, and I liked how they want to portray them as a real creature. Though I love anthro characters and the furry fandom, my heart has always been in fantasy.
Unicorns, fairies, mermaids, all that good stuff. Tohopka is based off the creatures in the images above from The spiderwick chronicles. I adore that field guide, and wanted something that could seem like it could be apart of the book, something real you could find.
My spirit animal is a sika deer, and I love anything deer related. But I didn't want to go with a deer character, I wanted something more unique. And while on FA one day I saw the suit here; http://www.furaffinity.net/view/16212869/
Noki, the closest monster, has forever stole my heart. Sadly they have left the fandom. :(
Fenwick the monster is my BIG crush as well; http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12909656/
As soon I found them I was like, "WOW yes that's what I could see myself as! There isn't a lot of elk or monsters, and definitely not the combination!".DESIGN;So I set to work designing. You can see how his desgin changed over time here; http://www.furaffinity.net/view/19428327/
I chose the now desgin because I really loved rust colored fur, and wanted to fit it into the look. The muzzle ring is because I felt his face needed something, and deer have this marking, nothing more.
His final design was chosen because I wanted something simple. I wanted him to like and elk, but not so much that you look at him and know what he is. I wanted people to be like "wow what is it?!".
His arm and leg socks are because an elks underside, legs up to stomach is all a darker brown. I didn't want to go with the stomach for reasons above, and I felt it didn't connect well with the mane.
His eyes were originally meant to be closed, but after I found Marconi hart on instagram and loved their suit work, I wanted them to make him. So they created his head base which ended up having open eyes.
If you look close he has a slanted deer pupil. I chose the black outing because I felt it was more monstrous?ANIMAL;Tohopka is a mix of mainly lion, elk, monster, and fisher cat. Lion being my favorite big cat. And fisher cat because when researching where he would come from, I picked Canada and these cats can be found there. He doesn't have any dragon in him.
The muzzle shape is for my love of chibi dragons, or anything chibi really.BACKSTORY;He was born from the relm of Where the wild things come from. Tohopka literally has blue blood as he was meant to be the monsters new king. But was separated from his parents as a cub. All he remembers now is somehow ending up in Canadian mountains where I was visiting.
I found him, brought them home and gave them pancakes. Now he has a strange addiction to maple syrup. His behavior is mainly meant to be feral, not able to speak, but acts like a mix of a child and a dog.
SO, to sum it up he's an elk monster and was inspired by these monster characters I adore, as well as mythical fantasy stuff.
Telephone was an inspiration but not as much as them. They are an amazing performer but goodness gracious just because they look similar doesn't mean I was trying to copy them, that they are the only good suiter or something?
His desgin was never meant to step on any toes. I don't connect to furry characters well. I've gone through sososo many, but he, means the world to me.
In the future I will be remaking the suit with realistic furs and more of an elk shaped muzzle.
But for now I am proud of how he looks. I've never made a suit for myself to wear that I was really happy in, but with improving my work I love wearing him. I'm going to be bring them to TFF coming up, and I was SO nervous about what people might say.
Thank to everyone's support I definitely feel confident enough to wear him and enjoy the con. ツ
